When you choose films, do you prefer science fiction, thrillers, comedies, fantasy, or action movies?
For instance, if you choose thrillers (or horror), perhaps it's your quick way to get an adrenaline rush: maybe you're seeking excitement, or you want to "escape" from your life, not think or make any decisions for at least the two-hour duration of the film.
But if you consistently choose thrillers or horror movies, does it mean there's something wrong with you? It's concerning if you find pleasure in scenes of violence, blood, or dismemberment.
It's problematic if you only watch horror and "gory" films where you don't need to think much, and violence dominates with an unjustified frequency, and you watch the film to the end even when you recognize this.
If you've experienced physical or emotional abuse, choosing films with violence might be a way of processing that experience, both from the perspective of the perpetrator and the victim, but in a safe environment, where the distress ends with the movie.
However, if such films leave you feeling anxious, helpless, or depressed, it might be a sign to seek professional help.
It's also a concern if you feel nothing at all: no disgust at bloody scenes, no empathy for the characters, absolutely nothing. Ultimately, we all have our dark side, our primal instincts, unexpressed aggression, and subconscious desires. Hence, we're drawn to the scary, dangerous, and primal, especially if our real lives are confined and our interactions minimal, with adrenaline coming only from food and films.
Reflect on this and consider what you might want to take away from films: to become more
unpredictable and daring, or to try surfing?
Analyze the characters you like and those you dislike, and why. What traits do they have? Do you possess these traits, or do you want to? Start introducing new
experiences, even if it's just taking a different route to work.
